Verma Malik
The man who penned lyrics for popular songs of 1970s and 1980s has passed away. He was 84 years old when he passed away peacefully at his residence in Juhu, Mumbai.
He was born in Ferozepur, Pakistan on 13th April, 1925. Before penning lyrics for films, he was used to write bhajans and often recites them. He was also the active freedom fighter when India was in reign of British. He also wrote many patriotic songs. After the partition he chose to stay in India.
In the beginning of his career, Malik get help from music director friend Hansraj Behl and wrote songs for Punjabi films. He got his first big break with Manoj Kumar’s film Yaadgar (1970). The song- Ek tara bole from the film was a big hit and with which he came to notice by the industry.
Later on he gave many hits like- Kaan me jhumaka chaal me thumaka from Saawan Bhadon (1970), Do bechaare from Victoria No. 203 (1972), Hay hay yeh majburi from Roti Kapada aur Makaan (1974), Tere sang pyaar me from Nagin (1976) and so on.
Sad after hearing the loss of industry, friend and Pyarelal of Laxmikant-Pyarelal musician duo said, “I’m sorry to hear about this. He was a very simple man. Vermaji ki khasiyat yeh thi ki, he could blend shayari and folk songs very well. We have worked together in a few films and he came across as a calm person, happy and proud of the work he was doing.”
